Introducing BeoPlayer

Bang & Olufsen's BeoPlayer sorts your music tracks and leaves you free to enjoy your music.

You can download your tracks directly from the Internet, or use BeoPlayer to record them from a CD and store them on your PC. BeoPlayer can automatically sort your music alphabetically by genre, artist, track title and album title. If you have already placed your tracks in folders of their own on your PC, these folders are available as well.

You can also create your own Playlists from the set of sorted tracks, including those tracks you have recorded. Your tracks remain stored in their folders on your PC the whole time, so you can copy, delete or rearrange tracks in your BeoPlayer Playlists as you choose.

Whether you want to play your tracks randomly or in a particular order, BeoPlayer keeps your music playing, so all you have to do is listen to it. BeoPlayer automatically plays your lists and CDs to the end, or until you tell it to stop.

Record tracks from an audio CD to your PC

Configure BeoPlayer for recording of audio CDs

Before you record, or ‘rip’, your audio CDs for storage on your PC, it is a good idea to preset a group of preferences for how you would like recording to occur. The ‘RECORD settings’ menu is available via the SETUP option on the control bar. Click SETUP, then CONFIG to call up the menu.

Options on the ‘Standard’ menu page
Recording quality
Choose the quality you want for your recorded music. The quality increases with the bitrate – the amount of data per second – but the size of the file increases at the same time. The default setting is 128 kbps (kilobytes per second)
Recording settings
Choose to record an entire CD or only a single track.
‘Stop recording on CD read error’
If you wish your recordings to stop automatically e.g. if a CD sector is faulty, set a check mark here.
File location
Choose where to store the recorded track or tracks on your PC. Click ‘Browse’ to look through your drives and folders. Click OK when done, or click ‘Cancel’ to return to the ‘Standard’ menu page.

Options on the ‘Licenses’ menu page
The ‘Licenses’ menu page contains information about usage licenses for CDs. These licenses allow you to record CDs for storage and use on your PC only. In addition, they allow you to download your recorded tracks to e.g. a portable mp3 player.

It is a good idea to make a backup copy of your licenses. If you wish to e.g. install a new operating system on your PC, you will need to save a copy of the licenses on a diskette or on a network drive. The licenses can then be restored when installation of the system is complete.

Choose a location for the backup copy.
Click ‘Browse’ to look through drives and folders. Click ‘OK’ when done, or ‘Cancel’ to return to the ‘Licenses’ menu page.
To make a copy, click ‘Backup now’.
To restore licenses, click ‘Restore now’.

Note that the option ‘Use DRM protection’ is not enabled by default. Enabling this option makes it possible to download recorded tracks to a portable mp3 player.

The CDDB² menu page
The ‘tag’ information that often accompanies your N.MUSIC tracks, such as artist name and album title, is often also available for your audio CDs. This information is useful if e.g. you record an audio CD for storage on your PC. Your recordings then contain the same reference information as your other N.MUSIC tracks. CD information is available via an Internet service called CDDB².
When you record a CD, BeoPlayer contacts the CDDB² service automatically via your Internet connection and downloads all available information regarding the current CD. If you deactivate CDDB² but still wish to use tag information for your recorded CD tracks, you must enter the information manually. Please refer to If CDDB² does not recognise your audio CD for further instruction.

Record from a CD to your PC

Recorded tracks are automatically placed in a new Playlist. Refer to Create or edit N.MUSIC Playlists for more information.
Before you record from an audio CD, please be sure to specify whether you wish to record one track at a time or record an entire CD. This is done in the CONFIG menus, which are accessible via the SETUP option on the control bar.

To record a CD...

Click PC CD to play a CD on your CD-ROM drive

If you wish to record a single track, click or to select the track

To start recording, click RECORD. The display shows RECORD and the track number in turn. If you have two CD-ROM drives, the drive letter is also shown.

BeoPlayer uses your Internet connection to download CD information from the CDDB² service. If CDDB² does not recognise your CD, you are prompted to fill in CD information manually, as described in the chapter 'If CDDB² does not recognise your audio CD...'

The control bar is locked during recording. However, it is possible to adjust the volume, or click STOP to stop the recording

To stop recording, click STOP. If you click STOP before recording is complete, the track being recorded is then deleted. Any fully recorded tracks are stored, along with the CD information provided by CDDB²

If your recording is complete or you press STOP...
...a new BeoPlayer Playlist is created which contains the recorded track or tracks.

Record from a CD to your PC

If CDDB² does not recognise your audio CD...
... the ‘CDDB Disc Information’ menu appears

Click the tabs at the top of the menu to view the different categories of information.
Click an entry field to move the cursor.
Use the keyboard to enter the requested information.
Click a new entry field or press TAB to move through the fields on a menu page.
Click ‘OK’ or ‘Next’ when you have entered the requested information on a menu page, or click ‘Cancel’ to leave the menu.

Microsoft Windows Media Rights Manager Restore and Security Upgrade Privacy Statement

Microsoft is very concerned about your privacy and will protect the privacy of information you provide through the Windows Media Rights Manager Restore and Security Upgrade (Individualization) services.

Restore Service:

In order to allow for a restore service, Microsoft and our partners (Record labels, Players, Video labels, and many others) worked to develop a restore schema. The goal of this service is to grant users permission to restore and move digital media licenses between personal machines for legitimate use. This service allows for a limited number of license transactions. When you restore your licenses you are sending some information to Microsoft that uniquely identifies your machine for internal tracking purposes. We store this unique machine identifier in a database and keep track of the number of times you attempt restore. Note that we do not share this unique machine identifier with any other services either internal or external to Microsoft. You also are sending some security information that enables us to restore your licenses to the new computer (or same computer that has either re-installed the OS or changed some hardware component). None of the security information is stored permanently. In the event that you exceed the limits of our restore schema you will be asked to provide some personally identifiable information. This information is necessary to prevent fraudulent restores and piracy of protected content. In addition, the data may be used internally to perform aggregate analysis of the restore service, such as helping to ensure that we have adequate capacity and security to meet the demand for the service. The personally identifiable information that you provide will not be used for any other purpose. It will be securely stored in a dedicated database located in the United States of America, and will be kept separate from information you may have provided to Microsoft in other contexts. This information will not be shared with any other services either internal or external to Microsoft. Both the unique machine identifier and any personally identifiable information will be transported and stored in a secure environment that protects against unauthorized access, data corruption or loss, and unwanted use or distribution. If you would like to access the personally identifiable information you have provided to Microsoft through the restore service, you can send your request by e-mail to drmpii@microsoft.com

Security Upgrade (Individualization):

In order to use content with a higher security rating, some vendors require that you upgrade your security components in the Windows Media Rights Manager. Microsoft provides this service and no unique information is shared with the content providers or any third parties. When you upgrade your security level, you are sending some information to Microsoft that uniquely identifies your machine for internal tracking purposes. We store this unique machine identifier in a database and keep track of the number of times you attempt to upgrade your security. We may also use this data internally to perform aggregate analysis of the security upgrade service, such as helping to ensure that we have adequate capacity and security to meet the demand for the service. Note that we do not share this unique machine identifier with any other services either internal or external to Microsoft. You also are sending some security information that enables us to deliver the appropriate security upgrade to your machine. None of the security information is stored permanently. We also keep track of which security upgrade files were downloaded to your machine. This information is not used to identify your machine, but to help Microsoft prevent security breaches that could affect legitimate users. The unique machine identifier and the security upgrade file information will be transported and stored in a secure environment that protects against unauthorized access, data corruption or loss, and unwanted use or distribution.

Contacting Microsoft:

If you believe that Microsoft has not adhered to these privacy principles, please notify us by e-mail at drmpriv@microsoft.com or by postal mail at the following address: Microsoft Corporation, Attn: Windows Media Rights Manager Service, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, Washington 98052-6399, USA.
